NEW YORK, Nov. 25 (AGCNewsNet) – Libya has concluded its presidency of the fourth edition of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction (MENWMDFZ), handing over leadership to Mauritania.

The transition occurred during a session attended by key figures, including the President of the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General, and the Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, according to a statement from Libya's Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Despite regional challenges, Libya's delegation, led by Ambassador Taher El Sonni, spearheaded significant advancements during its presidency. The team introduced updates to the conference's working group mechanisms and facilitated substantial discussions on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and nuclear verification.

These efforts reflect Libya's commitment to advancing the disarmament agenda and fostering regional security in the Middle East. The MENWMDFZ initiative continues to aim for a zone free from nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, promoting long-term stability in a volatile region.

The presidency handover marks a new chapter as Mauritania assumes the leadership role, tasked with driving the conference’s objectives forward in the coming year.
