KADUNA, Dec 15 (AGCNewsNet) – The Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Bamalli, has described the decision to demolish the 188-year-old Malam Abdulkarim Central Mosque in Zaria as a difficult but necessary step to ensure public safety.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the mosque’s reconstruction on Sunday, Bamalli emphasized the priority placed on safeguarding lives by the Emirate Council.
“This decision was not taken lightly. Your well-being and security have always been at the forefront of our thoughts and actions,” the Emir stated.
The Emir expressed gratitude to the Kaduna State Government for compensating victims of the 2023 mosque collapse and assisting with the expansion project. He also commended the highest donation of ₦2 billion by Alhaji Abdussamad Isyaka-Rabi’u through the ASR Africa and BUA Group.
The historic mosque, originally constructed in the 1830s, has been a cornerstone of faith and community engagement in the region.
Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives and member representing Zaria Federal Constituency, called the mosque one of Nigeria’s most significant historical heritages. He noted that the rebuilding project is expected to take 18 months but requires additional funding for completion. Tajudeen urged philanthropists to contribute generously to ensure the success of the project.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the mosque’s reconstruction. “The speed and manner in which people responded is a testament to the high esteem in which this great monument is held and the place of religion in our personal and national life,” he said.
The reconstruction comes after the mosque’s tragic collapse in 2023 during afternoon prayers, an incident that claimed eight lives and left many injured. Efforts are ongoing to restore this historic landmark to its former glory.
