ABUJA, Dec 27 (AGCNewsNet) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dismissed allegations that Nigeria and other member states are involved in sponsoring terrorism, describing the accusations as baseless and unfounded.

In a statement released Thursday, ECOWAS expressed strong support for Nigeria’s peacekeeping initiatives and lauded its pivotal role in promoting stability in West Africa.

"The Commission stands firmly with Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism," the statement read.

The regional body commended Nigeria’s leadership in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), highlighting its achievements in combating terrorism and fostering peace in the subregion. ECOWAS characterized Nigeria as a "generous and magnanimous country" that has consistently demonstrated a commitment to peace and security not only in West Africa but across the continent.

This development follows escalating tensions between Nigeria and Niger Republic, marked by recent accusations from Nigerien military leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani.

Tchiani accused Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of collaborating with France to destabilize Niger, claiming Tinubu received financial incentives from France to allow French military presence in Borno State. He further alleged Nigerian involvement in the Lakurawa terrorist group's attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline on December 13, 2024.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has categorically denied these allegations, reiterating the country’s dedication to fostering peaceful relations with its neighbors.

ECOWAS urged all member states to prioritize constructive dialogue and avoid making accusations without credible evidence, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing regional challenges.
