CAIRO, EJan. 9(AGCNewsNet) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has called for a national consensus in Lebanon to end the country's prolonged presidential vacancy, emphasizing the importance of a solution free from external pressures.
During a phone call with Jean-Yves Le Drian, French President Emmanuel Macron’s special envoy to Lebanon, Abdelatty discussed the upcoming Lebanese parliamentary vote aimed at electing a successor to former President Michel Aoun, who left office in October 2022.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting Lebanon during this critical period and stressed the need to empower its national institutions.
The Lebanese Parliament is set to convene on January 9 for the vote. A successful candidate must secure a two-thirds majority, or 86 votes, in the first round, with an absolute majority required in subsequent rounds.
Lebanon has been without a president for over a year, creating a political vacuum that has compounded the country’s ongoing economic and social crises.
