NAIROBI, Jan 9 (AGCNewsNet) – A video showing young men sitting atop the famous MoneyFest Matatu, owned by President William Ruto’s son, George Ruto, has sparked outrage online. The clip, originally posted on the matatu’s Instagram page, captured the vehicle flouting traffic laws on the Nairobi–Ongata Rongai route while passing by a police officer who appeared indifferent to the violations.
The incident occurred near the Maasai Lodge stage, where the matatu was seen using the wrong lane and allowing passengers to dangerously sit on its roof. The spectacle has drawn sharp criticism, with many questioning the disregard for public safety and traffic regulations.
Fredrick, a Rongai resident, expressed concern over the dangerous precedent such actions set. “The culture is like a live concert on the road. Filming on top of the matatu is risky and might influence younger admirers of matatu culture to emulate such behavior,” he said.
Netizens have also condemned the perceived immunity of the MoneyFest Matatu, suggesting that its connection to the president’s family may be enabling the impunity.
Adding to the controversy, a recent video revealed that the matatu, which reportedly cost KSh 20 million to customize, earns KSh 500,000 monthly, according to its driver. The revelations have further fueled public anger, with many demanding stricter enforcement of traffic laws regardless of status or influence.
