ADDIS ABABA, Mar. 10 (AGCNewsNet) - Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, inaugurated a drone manufacturing facility capable of producing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for both civilian and military use.
The launch of the Sky Win Aeronautics Industries factory comes amid increasing speculation from analysts and social media users about a potential conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Speaking at the event, Abiy said the drones are equipped with artificial intelligence and include one-way attack drones.
"This industry is part of Ethiopia’s broader efforts to achieve technological self-reliance in the security sector. Ethiopia has developed the capacity not only to produce and utilize drones but also to export them," he said.
In a post on X, the prime minister described the locally produced UAVs as a milestone that would have been "unimaginable just a few years ago."
Abiy also emphasized the role of Ethiopian engineers in developing drones with diverse capabilities, calling it a testament to the country’s growing technological expertise.
He urged further investment in research, market expansion, and local production of smart sensor technologies.
"We are developing capabilities like these—along with the advancements at Homicho Ammunition Engineering Industry—not to fuel conflict, but to prevent it," he added. "Through deterrence, we seek to secure peace and stability in the face of belligerent actors."
