ADDIS ABABA, April 16 (AGCNewsNet) – On April 27, 2025, Ethiopia will host the "Made in Ethiopia" 10-kilometer street race in Addis Ababa, aiming to spotlight the nation’s expanding local sportswear manufacturing sector. The event, which is part of the government’s "Let Ethiopia Produce" campaign, seeks to promote homegrown industries and encourage domestic production.
The race, set in Meskel Square, will see over 10,000 participants, including athletes from various sports clubs and members of the public. According to Abeba Tamene, Public Relations Head at the Ministry of Industry, the primary focus of the event is not prize money or international athletes, but to highlight Ethiopia’s ability to produce high-quality sportswear and other locally made products.
“We are not just hosting another race, but rather a platform to showcase Ethiopian-made sportswear and promote local manufacturing,” said Abeba. “This race is about increasing awareness of the quality products our country can produce.”
With 565 athletes from 34 clubs participating, the race will include both men’s and women’s categories. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers, with 300,000 Birr for first place, 200,000 Birr for second place, and 100,000 Birr for third place.
The event will also serve as an opportunity to foster collaboration between local manufacturers and the public while promoting Ethiopian-made sporting gear. The Ethiopian Athletics Federation underscores the importance of this event in giving local athletes the chance to shine on a larger platform, while supporting the nation’s economic goals to strengthen local industries and reduce dependence on imports.
