DAKAR, Apr 16 (AGCNewsNet) – A Senegalese Member of Parliament has proposed the indictment of former President Macky Sall on high treason charges, marking what could become a historic legal development in the West African nation's democratic history.

The move follows a recent report by the Court of Auditors that uncovered alleged financial misconduct during Sall’s tenure from 2019 to 2023. The findings cite the use of forged documents, embezzlement, money laundering, and illicit enrichment linked to government funds under Sall’s administration.

Though current investigations led by the Ministry of Justice are focused solely on financial crimes, Justice Minister Ousmane Diagne has not ruled out the possibility of future high treason charges, pending further evidence.

According to Senegal’s Constitution, a former president may only be prosecuted for high treason. Such a charge requires approval from the National Assembly and would trigger a trial before the country’s High Court of Justice.

The lawmaker’s proposal has drawn support from civil society groups and opposition figures who have consistently called for greater accountability in governance. If the National Assembly accepts the motion, it would set the stage for an unprecedented trial in Senegal’s political and legal landscape.

Former President Macky Sall stepped down earlier this year after completing two terms in office. His successor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has promised sweeping reforms and a clampdown on corruption as part of his new administration's agenda.

Legal analysts suggest that the case, if it proceeds, could redefine the role of accountability in Senegalese politics and inspire broader institutional reforms across West Africa.
