MINNA, April 23 (AGCNewsNet) – The Nigerian government has officially launched commercial flight operations at the newly reconstructed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, with Overland Airways becoming the first airline to operate from the facility.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who presided over the inauguration, said the airport is designed to serve as a strategic alternative to Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. He noted that relevant border and security agencies—including Customs, Immigration, Police, and NDLEA—will soon be deployed to ensure seamless passenger processing if Abuja’s airport experiences any disruptions.

Keyamo praised Niger State Governor Umaru Bago for his commitment to the project, calling it a major step towards boosting investment, employment, and GDP, especially in the agricultural sector.

Governor Bago, in his remarks, credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support, and unveiled an ambitious vision for the airport. He said the facility spans 3,000 hectares and ongoing developments include:

l Renovation of the existing terminal and runway

l Construction of a new state-of-the-art terminal

l An aviation estate featuring 500 housing units

l A fuel dump and a five-star Hilton hotel

l 1,000 km of supportive road networks

He also mentioned that 180 containers of equipment and materials are en route by ship for further airport development, positioning it as a future global aviation hub.

Minister of Information and National Orientation Idris Mohammed also commended the progress, tying it to broader national gains such as a gradual drop in food prices driven by President Tinubu’s strategic policies.

Founder and Managing Director of Overland Airways, Edward Boyo, pledged top-notch service and called for continued support from stakeholders to ensure the airport's long-term success.
