ACCRA, May 1 (AGCNewsNet) — President John Dramani Mahama has pledged six months of his salary to support the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund, dubbed Mahama Cares, aimed at assisting Ghanaians battling chronic diseases such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart conditions.
Speaking at the fund’s launch in Accra, the President called on corporate Ghana—banks, mining companies, and other businesses—to contribute to the initiative as part of their corporate social responsibility.
“This programme must not be seen as the government’s effort alone,” Mahama said. “These are your clients, your customers, your staff. Supporting this fund is an investment in the same people who sustain your businesses.”
The President emphasized that the fund is intended to address a major gap in the nation’s healthcare system, where advanced treatment options are often inaccessible to low-income citizens due to high costs.
Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh described the initiative as a timely effort to promote equity in healthcare access. He also announced that a draft bill outlining the fund’s management framework is ready and will be submitted to Parliament once it resumes.
In a significant boost, Akandoh confirmed that the cap on the National Health Insurance Fund has been lifted, unlocking additional resources for the Mahama Cares programme.
