ABUJA, May 6 (AGCNewsNet) — Popular social media influencer Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), is expected to regain his freedom today, following a week-long detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
An unnamed senior EFCC official confirmed on Monday that while Otse remains in custody, he has yet to be officially charged. However, the official noted that Otse will likely be arraigned in court on Thursday.
Otse's lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the arrest on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that VDM and his associate, C Park, were picked up by a team of police officers. In a fresh update posted Monday night, Adeyanju stated that the EFCC has failed to provide a clear reason for the arrest.
“Got into the country this evening and went straight to VDM at EFCC. Just left him. We still cannot understand why he was arrested. EFCC said there’s no petition against him after our repeated demand,” Adeyanju wrote.
The lack of clarity surrounding the arrest has sparked outrage among VDM’s supporters. On Monday, dozens of young Nigerians took to the streets in Abuja, marching from the EFCC headquarters to a commercial bank where he was reportedly arrested.
Protesters carried placards reading, “Release Very Dark Man” and “Seyi Tinubu, Are You Involved?”, calling the detention unlawful and demanding transparency from law enforcement authorities.
As the situation unfolds, public attention remains fixed on the EFCC’s next steps and whether the charges to be filed on Thursday will clarify the legal grounds for Otse’s arrest.
