LUSAKA, May 26 (AGCNewsNet) – Zambia marked Africa Freedom Day with a series of patriotic tributes and a heartfelt recognition of its heroes, both past and present. President Hakainde Hichilema led the commemorations, beginning with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Freedom Statue in Lusaka—a national symbol of the country’s fight for independence.

Joined by senior government officials, dignitaries, and citizens, the President paid homage to Zambia’s fallen freedom fighters. Their sacrifices, he said, paved the way for the liberties enjoyed by the nation today.

“As we stand here today, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their all for our freedom,” said President Hichilema. “Their courage must never be forgotten.”

The day’s events continued at State House, where the President bestowed national honours and awards on outstanding citizens for their contributions to the country’s development, unity, and sovereignty.

Among the recipients was the late Dora Mono Nyambe, posthumously honoured for her humanitarian efforts. Nyambe, who died at the age of 32, was celebrated for rescuing over 200 vulnerable children from starvation. “We wish she was here to see the impact of her works,” President Hichilema said, describing her legacy as one of “compassion and selflessness.”

“These honours reflect our deep appreciation for the selfless dedication and patriotic spirit that have shaped our great nation,” he added. “Their work reminds us all of the importance of service, sacrifice, and unity.”

Africa Freedom Day, observed annually on May 25, commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) in 1963. It serves as both a remembrance of Africa’s liberation struggles and a call to continue building a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated continent.

Zambia’s commemoration ended with a renewed national call for unity and resilience. “As we remember where we came from, let us remain steadfast in our journey forward—towards inclusive growth, economic resilience, and a brighter future for every Zambian,” President Hichilema concluded.
