LAGOS, July 4 (AGCNewsNet) – Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, has died at the age of 61 after a brief illness, the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed on Thursday.
Announcing his passing in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Super Eagles wrote: “We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Rufai, fondly known as Dodomayana by fans and teammates, was a key member of Nigeria’s golden generation, helping the national team to clinch the 1994 AFCON title and qualify for their first FIFA World Cup that same year.
