NAIROBI, July 10 (AGCNewsNet) — Kenyan President William Ruto has ordered police to use force — including shooting protesters in the leg — to curb acts of vandalism and looting during ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
Ruto issued the directive Wednesday while commissioning a new police station, declaring that the destruction of businesses and infrastructure witnessed in recent days was “not acceptable.”
“If someone is destroying public property or looting private businesses, incapacitate them. Shoot them in the leg if you must,” Ruto said, in his strongest statement yet since protests erupted last month.
The country has seen widespread unrest fueled by public anger over the cost of living, alleged corruption, and controversial government tax proposals. Monday’s “Saba Saba” demonstrations — which coincided with the 35th anniversary of Kenya’s return to multi-party democracy — turned deadly, with at least 31 people killed according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. Police, however, confirmed 11 deaths and over 500 arrests.
The president’s remarks have drawn concern from rights groups and legal experts who warn that the directive may lead to excessive use of force and further violations of civil liberties.
Ruto defended the instruction as necessary for restoring order and protecting livelihoods, vowing to use “whatever means necessary” to stabilise the country.
Several parts of Nairobi remain tense, with businesses in Kangemi, Mathare, and Kibera reporting damage and theft. Protest organisers say more demonstrations are planned unless the government backs down on its recent economic reforms.
The Kenya Police Service has yet to issue an official response on whether it will implement the president’s controversial order.
