LIBREVILLE, July 13 (AGCNewsNet) — Gabon has officially launched its electoral process for local and legislative elections scheduled for September 27, as the country moves deeper into its political transition under President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
The electoral calendar was unveiled this week, with members of the national election commission sworn in by the Constitutional Court. The revision of electoral rolls will begin on July 14 and run through August 12. This process will allow for the registration of new voters, the removal of deceased or ineligible individuals, and the updating of voter information and polling centers.
Citizens aged 18 and above with a valid Personal Identification Number (PIN) will be automatically registered, with the only requirement being the selection of a preferred polling center.
Local electoral commissions are expected to be established by July 26 and deployed nationwide and abroad. Candidate nominations for the legislative and local elections will open from July 27 to August 7.
The Ministry of the Interior and the election commission have pledged to ensure “credible, transparent and peaceful” elections. Citizens have been urged to participate actively in shaping Gabon's Fifth Republic.
This announcement comes shortly after President Oligui Nguema, who took power in a 2023 coup, introduced his new political party — the Democratic Union of Builders (UDB). Though initially viewed as a transitional leader, Oligui won April’s presidential election with nearly 95% of the vote and is now widely seen as positioning himself for long-term political leadership.
The launch of the UDB suggests a shift from military rule to structured governance, giving Oligui a formal political platform as Gabon charts its post-coup future.
