LAGOS, July 16 (AGCNewsNet) – Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has submitted a formal proposal to construct what could become Nigeria’s largest and deepest seaport in Ogun State, reviving plans originally stalled over administrative disputes.
The Dangote Group filed the proposal with Ogun State authorities in late June, targeting the Olokola Free Trade Zone as the project site. The location, about 100 kilometers from the group’s fertilizer and petrochemical facilities in Lagos, was initially selected for industrial expansion before being abandoned due to unresolved issues with a former state administration.
According to details of the proposal, the new port would be constructed to handle large-scale exports of products such as cement, oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and fertilizer – all key sectors for the industrial conglomerate.
If approved, the seaport would serve as a major export hub for Dangote’s operations and could significantly enhance Nigeria’s logistics infrastructure, especially for heavy industrial output.
While the Ogun State government has not yet made a formal decision on the proposal, the project could mark a major milestone in Nigeria’s maritime development and a strategic boost to West African trade routes.
