KIGALI, July 24 (AGCNewsNet) — Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, has dismissed Prime Minister, Edouard Ngirente, and appointed Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, the vice governor of the National Bank of Rwanda, as his replacement.
Ngirente, who had served as prime minister since 2017, was removed in a move that signals a likely reshuffle of Rwanda’s Cabinet in the coming days. Nsengiyumva’s appointment was confirmed by the government’s spokesperson in an official statement.
“I fully embrace the responsibility entrusted to me and remain committed to advancing our national priorities with integrity and purpose,” Nsengiyumva said after the announcement. “I will give all I have in me to help you [President Kagame] achieve your great vision for this country.”
Under Rwanda’s Constitution, the president is expected to appoint new Cabinet members in consultation with the incoming prime minister within 15 days.
Nsengiyumva brings extensive economic experience to the role. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Leicester, a master’s in economic policy and management from the University of Nairobi, and a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. His career spans roles as a permanent secretary in the Ministries of Education and Trade and Industry, and as a senior economic advisor in the UK government’s Office of Rail and Road.
The new appointment comes at a pivotal time for Rwanda as the country pursues ambitious economic reforms and prepares for the next phase of its Vision 2050 development strategy.
