BORNO, Aug 13 (AGCNewsNet) – Boko Haram militants launched a deadly assault on a Nigerian military base in Rann, Kala Balge district of Borno State, killing at least two soldiers and forcing others to flee into neighbouring Cameroon, military sources said.
The fighters reportedly stormed the base in the early hours, setting armoured tanks ablaze and seizing an unspecified quantity of ammunition.
“There was another Boko Haram dislodgement on our base in Borno. The CIO Battalion in Rann, Kala Balge, was attacked by them. They killed two of our soldiers and injured many others. Some who managed to escape left their duty post and fled with their arms into Cameroon,” one source told AGCNewsNet.
The incident comes months after a similar attack in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, where 22 soldiers, including a commander, were killed.
Nigeria has been battling the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East since 2009. Despite repeated military claims of defeating the group, the militants continue to mount raids across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, killing thousands and displacing millions.
Troops have long complained of inadequate weapons and resources, accusing top commanders of leaving them at a disadvantage against better-armed insurgents.
