ABUJA, Aug 26 (AGCNewsNet) – Nigeria has confirmed steady progress on the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP), a landmark transcontinental energy project set to enhance regional integration and strengthen energy security for both Africa and Europe.
Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said in a statement that the over 5,000-kilometre pipeline—designed to cross more than a dozen countries—illustrates Abuja’s commitment to expanding its gas exports beyond its immediate neighborhood.
“This continental project demonstrates Abuja’s commitment to exporting its gas well beyond its immediate neighborhood and to align its efforts with broader regional cooperation,” Ekpo stated.
For Morocco, the NMGP represents a long-term strategic vision initiated by King Mohammed VI and reinforced by successive agreements with Nigeria. Beyond its role as an energy infrastructure project, officials describe the pipeline as a lever for inclusive development, aimed at boosting West Africa’s economic integration while positioning Morocco as a key energy transit and processing hub on the Atlantic.
The project also complements Morocco’s ambitious energy transition strategy, which couples investments in renewable energy with a strong role in securing fossil fuel resources for the region.
According to Ekpo, the NMGP builds on the foundations of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) and paves the way for closer cooperation among coastal nations. “The NMGP illustrates Nigeria’s vocation to project its energy into the African Atlantic,” he added.
By reaffirming its partnership with Morocco, Abuja underlined the project’s strategic significance—combining energy diplomacy, regional integration, and security of supply for Africa and Europe.
