YAOUNDE, Sept. 19 (AGCNewsNet) – The daughter of Cameroon's long-serving President Paul Biya has publicly urged voters not to cast their ballots for her father in the upcoming presidential election, according to a video posted on social media that has gone viral.
Brenda Biya, 27, published the video on her TikTok account on Thursday from Switzerland, where she said she would "cut" all contact with her parents and accused her family of mistreating her, according to the social media post.
"I will not vote for Paul Biya," the president's only daughter said in the video, according to local media reports. "I hope there will be another president."
The extraordinary public break with her father comes as the 91-year-old incumbent prepares for what would be his seventh re-election campaign after more than four decades in power, according to political observers.
Brenda Biya also claimed that people close to her family were "wanting her dead," according to the video content reported by local media outlets.
The video has been welcomed by the political opposition, though no official reaction has emerged from the presidency or the government, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Paul Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982 and is one of the world's longest-serving leaders, according to international political analysts.
The president's daughter has previously caused controversy through social media posts, notably through videos showing herself dancing and last year when she announced her homosexuality, a sexual orientation that is deeply frowned upon in Cameroon, according to rights groups.
Homosexuality remains illegal in the Central African nation, where same-sex relations can result in prison sentences of up to five years, according to human rights organizations.
The timing of the video appears calculated to maximum impact ahead of the presidential election, though no official date has been set for the vote, according to electoral commission sources.
Biya's long rule has been marked by allegations of corruption, economic mismanagement, and an ongoing separatist conflict in the country's English-speaking regions, according to opposition politicians and international observers.
The president has not yet officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming election, though government sources indicate he intends to seek another term, according to political analysts.
