Abuja, Sept 20 (AGCNewsNet) – Kenya Airways has settled the sanction fee imposed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) following consumer rights violations, including the much-publicized case involving Nigerian passenger, Gloria Omisore.
The airline paid the fine on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 — six months after the penalty was announced. NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the development in a statement and via his official X handle.
“Kenya Airways has, on Wednesday 17/09/2025, paid the sanction fee as a penalty for the Gloria Omisore and other consumer protection-related infractions,” Achimugu stated.
The settlement followed a series of diplomatic and regulatory meetings involving the Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport officials, and Kenya Airways representatives.
The sanction stemmed from a February 2025 incident when Omisore, traveling from Lagos to Manchester via Paris, was denied boarding at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Airline staff claimed she needed a Schengen transit visa, despite prior assurances to the contrary. The ordeal left her stranded in Nairobi for 17 hours, before she faced another 10-hour delay on an alternative London-bound flight.
The NCAA fined the airline N3 million, directed it to compensate Omisore and two other affected passengers with 1,000 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) each, and issue a formal public apology.
While commending Kenya Airways for compliance, Achimugu stressed that monetary payment alone does not conclude the matter.
“The payment of sanction fines does not conclude the issues. The timeframe for the resolution of the cases has since elapsed. The NCAA will follow through and is assuring both passengers and airlines of its commitment to protecting their rights and responsibilities,” he said.
The case has been a flashpoint for aviation consumer rights in Nigeria, highlighting regulatory enforcement and accountability in passenger treatment across African carriers.
