ABUJA, Sept 26 (AGCNewsNet) – China has announced plans to establish Africa’s first local insulin production facility in Nigeria, a move expected to reduce reliance on imports and improve diabetes care across the continent.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, revealed the initiative at a reception in Abuja marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. He said the project, led by Chinese companies in partnership with Nigeria, would position the country as a hub for African medical biotechnology.
“This will transform diabetes management, prevent complications, and end Nigeria’s dependence on imported insulin,” Yu said. He added that the plan follows other China-Nigeria collaborations, including the recently completed Abuja Water Supply Project, which delivers clean water to nearly three million people.
Yu also highlighted the “unique bond” between the two nations, noting that both China’s National Day and Nigeria’s Independence Day fall on October 1. He celebrated examples of cooperation, including the recognition of Nigeria’s first female train driver trained in China, Issah Fatimah Abiola, and the addition of Mandarin to Nigeria’s senior secondary school curriculum.
Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, praised China’s support and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening ties in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, education, defence, trade and investment.
“In recent decades, our relationship has blossomed into a comprehensive strategic partnership defined by tangible outcomes,” Jibrin said.
