ABUJA, Oct 29 (AGCNewsNet) – The Federal Government has responded to recent remarks by former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, clarifying that the $1 billion modernisation of the Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos is part of a nationwide strategy to upgrade Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure.

In a statement issued by Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Special Adviser to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, the ministry emphasized that the modernisation initiative is not limited to Lagos but extends to ports across several regions.

“The Federal Government is modernising and upgrading the nation’s ports in a comprehensive and inclusive manner — not concentrating efforts solely in Lagos,” Akinola said.

He explained that procurement processes have already begun for the renovation and modernisation of ports in Warri, Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Onne, alongside the Lagos port projects. The ministry is also collaborating with state governments and private investors on new deep seaport developments in Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States.

“These projects reflect the ministry’s commitment to balanced development and regional economic inclusion within the framework of the national blue economy,” Akinola added.

He further cited the Onitsha River Port in Anambra State, developed by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), as proof of government efforts to decentralize port operations and improve inland maritime access.

While acknowledging the necessity of modernising the Lagos ports due to their age and trade volume, Akinola stressed that the initiative forms only one part of a broader agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope vision.

“The claim that the Federal Government is neglecting ports outside Lagos is incorrect and misleading,” he stated. “Our policies demonstrate a deliberate and balanced approach to strengthening Nigeria’s maritime capacity and promoting national prosperity.”

The ministry reiterated its commitment to transparent and equitable governance in the marine and blue economy, assuring that ongoing reforms will ensure all regions benefit from Nigeria’s expanding maritime potential.
