ABUJA, May 25 (AGCNewsNet) - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally secured the presidential nomination of the All Progressives Congress (APC), positioning him as the party’s candidate for Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
The announcement followed party primaries in which Tinubu won by a landslide, confirming expectations that he would lead the ruling party into the next election cycle.
He is now expected to be officially presented as the APC flagbearer at a ceremony in Abuja in the coming days.
Tinubu, who first assumed office in 2023, has consistently signalled his intention to seek a second term. His nomination clears what was largely viewed as a procedural hurdle, given his strong influence within the party.
The APC reportedly remains the dominant political force in the country, controlling 31 of Nigeria’s 36 states following a series of defections from opposition parties.
Tinubu’s only challenger in the primaries, businessman Stanley Osifo, reportedly paid 100 million naira to enter the race but was decisively defeated.
While the ruling party described the exercise as evidence of internal democracy, analysts note that the broader political landscape remains heavily tilted in favour of the incumbent.
Tinubu’s administration has implemented a series of economic reforms aimed at stabilising government finances and attracting investment. However, the impact on households has been mixed.
Inflation peaked at around 30 percent in 2024 and remains elevated, while fuel prices have risen sharply over the past four years. Poverty levels are also estimated to have increased, affecting a majority of the population.
Despite these challenges, Tinubu remains the frontrunner for the 2027 election, with a fragmented opposition still in the process of selecting its candidates.
The upcoming election is expected to be shaped by economic concerns, including cost-of-living pressures, employment, and currency stability.
