Mekelle, Ethiopia — The leader of Ethiopia’s Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Debretsion Gebremichael, has warned that the conflict in the northern Tigray region is continuing, despite recent changes in control of key areas.
Speaking in a message broadcast on Tigrayan television on Wednesday, Debretsion said the TPLF was still fighting federal forces and vowed that the region would remain hostile to its enemies. He also claimed the group had recorded several tactical successes in recent clashes.
Last week, the TPLF leader said rebel fighters had neutralised hundreds of Ethiopian federal soldiers during confrontations in northern and central Tigray. The claims have not been independently verified, and details about the reported casualties remain unclear.
The latest developments follow the Ethiopian army’s return to Mekelle, Tigray’s regional capital, earlier this month after TPLF forces withdrew from the city. The change has added to uncertainty over the balance of power in a region that has experienced years of conflict and political tension with the federal government.
Analysts have warned that further military advances in Tigray could heighten tensions between Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea. Relations between the two countries remain fragile, and renewed hostilities in northern Ethiopia could increase the risk of a broader regional confrontation.
Violence has also been reported elsewhere in the country. A drone strike in southern Tigray earlier this week killed four people, according to the report. Separate strikes reportedly targeted civilians and a school in the Amhara region, where Ethiopian government forces are fighting Fano militants.
The latest reports highlight the continuing security challenges facing Ethiopia, where multiple armed confrontations have complicated efforts to restore stability. The situation in Tigray remains uncertain, with competing claims from the TPLF and federal forces making it difficult to establish the full extent of recent battlefield developments.
