JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 14 (AGCNewsNet) – Johannesburg’s iconic planetarium is set to reopen as the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome in February 2025, marking a new milestone for science and education in sub-Saharan Africa. The revamped facility will offer visitors a 360-degree immersive experience of the universe, powered by ten high-resolution digital projectors and surround sound.

Located at Wits University, the dome has been a cornerstone of astronomical learning since its establishment in 1960, welcoming tens of thousands of schoolchildren and aspiring astronomers over the years. Its modernization is expected to draw a new generation of stargazers and tech enthusiasts.

Moumita Aich, head of the Digital Dome, emphasized how the facility’s cutting-edge technology will enhance educational experiences for all ages, saying, “This is screen time, but you actually get to learn a lot from that whole 20 or 30 minutes.”

Beyond public engagement, the dome will also serve as a research hub for scientists to visualize and present their findings on the vast digital display, expanding its role in both education and scientific research in South Africa.
